Easter Eggs

I can't believe how fast time flies, thinking that Easter will be upon us March 27, 2016! A couple of warms days, disappearing snow, does miracles for wanting to get spring clothes out and to spend more time outside. This all brings me memories of family Easter traditions.  Coloring Easter eggs was a big deal in our family. Mom would bring out dozens of eggs, different colors, while we kids would vie for the colors we wanted for our eggs. Afterward, we would compare our treasures to see how each one of us did our eggs.

One thing, however, the symbolism of the egg in our Christian tradition was never mentioned so, now, as an adult, I am once again wide-eyed learning a deeper meaning; the egg in the Christian tradition represents Jesus' resurrection and emergence from the tomb. Actually, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, and otherwise has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring.

Are there situations in your spiritual life that were never discussed, explained nor talked about in earlier years, that now have come to light?  Do you find it exciting, broadening and enriching knowing it's never too late?  There are times in the present day when we learn new information about traditions that were simply not thought about many years ago. Isn't it exciting to know how this can deepen our faith life! Hmmmm....maybe Easter egg coloring might take on a new meaning this year?

St. Patrick's Day!

What is St Patrick's Day all about?

Whether you're Irish or not, it seems that many folks get into the spirit of St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.  This feast day is celebrated this next week, March 17th. St. Patrick was born in roman Britain in the latter part of the 4th century. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped and then taken to Ireland as a slave. He did escape and then returned about 432 to convert the Irish to Christianity.

To all who are Irish, whether for a day or for a life-time, may the luck 'o the Irish be with you now and forever!

The Rock

Recently I met a long-time friend for breakfast at a restaurant with a wonderful view of the lake.  It snowed the night before leaving beautiful snow on the rocks, overlooking a lovely view of gentle waves and ice flows.

I was early so I just relished sitting there daydreaming with the view. This time was such a gift, pondering some deeper realities as I looked at the rock with snow, the motion of the waves, ice on top of the waves and then thinking about how, as one goes deeper under those waves, the surface motion calms down.

Many things came to me:  how our life is like the waves on top, actually like the ice sitting on top of the water.  Snorkeling times came to mind and being on the top of the water often brought me so close to being sea sick!  It wasn't a good place to be! I was at the mercy of the wind, the waves and the current. Often, our days are like that!

Actually the boulder on shore brought more inspiration:  large, unmoving, always there, not going anywhere...holding the beauty of the night's snowfall on top. It's easy for me to relate some details in my life that are like the waves, the ice, and the movement of it all in and out of the shoreline. It begged the question:  What are the waves...and the ice in our lives?  Each of us must answer these questions for ourselves.

Finally, however,  the rock got my attention!  I had to slow down and take a bit more time. Then I asked myself, "what are those "rocks" in my life that are always there for me, constant, holding me up?" Maybe each one of us, too, needs to slow down and take more time to realize, to "see" and experience the Rock in our life...and ask, what are the "rocks" in our life?!
