Trees

Thirty-one years ago we planted a tree in our yard at home, a huge, beautiful red maple. It was shortly after mom had died. My brother, Dan, was here for a few days during this time. Several days ago, to make a long story short, we noticed one of the two trunks was cracked and completely open all the way to the ground. We needed to call the tree guy immediately in order to save a tragedy with a coming storm later that day...enough to postpone it's complete removal tomorrow.

I love trees.  Roots thrust deep into the earth, the trunk growing to heights beyond compare and branches reaching in all directions. The shade this tree has offered us, refuge for birds, squirrels and other animals, leave me in awe. Memories flood my soul remembering another maple at home I used to climb as a kid in our side yard.

That maple was my escape.  I could get away from frustrations at school. The branch held me securely holding me in a snug way as I struggled with my feelings of doubt, hurts, misunderstandings. The leafy limbs hid me from intruders. This tree today in our yard reminds me of mom, her death, my brother's visit and all the years of majesty she has given us.

Are there trees in your life that are a sanctuary for you, a holy place where you can rest. I don't climb too many trees any longer but in my mind I can still lean my head gently against this old tree and entertain gentle voices in my head that call my name as I remember. How unique it is to have a moment to recapture such memories.
