Always Options

It snowed here yesterday and overnight but what else is new during winter in Wisconsin! Today I had plans with friends for a good movie, lunch and just an afternoon of foolishness...a "play day." However, the snow created some concern so the plans were canceled.  Yes, I was disappointed but that didn't last long.

A good friend had just come to town on one of many as she has been very attentive to her aging mother so we visited over breakfast. Afterward I took her down the street to show her where the new (to her) movie theatre was...and saw on the sign that "A Dog's Purpose" was playing.

In an instant we decided to go, after she checked in with her mom, and me checking in with my husband just to inform them we would be home later than planned!  We then laughed and giggled all the way feeling like two schoolkids doing something "naughty" thrilled we both were so free to spend such a day together.

The roads were clear, sun was out, the day was simply delightful.  It convinced me to never get too bent out of shape when original plans fall through. Living in the present, being open to "life" around us and seizing the moment...there's always options!  And yes, take kleenex if you go see this movie!!!

Messes

Rain, ice, melting snow, wet, foggy, dreary...yesterday, today, tomorrow? Has your spirit ever felt just like the days have been lately? I understand completely!  And with all of it, salt, sand, wet floors all tracked inside. It's been a vicious cycle of trying to keep sidewalks and driveway safe for walking, trying not to track the mess inside but once inside that needs to be cleaned up!

When my spirit begins to feel like the outdoors I can't even think of "running away", can't even get to the point of getting upstairs to take a bath or crawling into bed! The weather is simply an analogy for our life sometimes when we wish the sun and warmth would return. What a funk.

What warmth is there in our daily life, though?  My sister in law gave me a medal that I have warn for many years since my nephew died and it reads, "Faith, Family, Friends."  It is true. Today at Mass one of the songs was "Be Still and Know that I am God." That song spoke deeply to my spirit. Later, my sister called, followed by a friend who called. Good conversations ensued with all three: God, my sister and my friend!

It's still crummy outside but inside is warmer. There are messes still to be cleaned up but nothing so pressing a good night's sleep won't help. Tomorrow is another day and maybe, just maybe, the sun will shine a little bit!  At any rate, my gratitude says, "thanks to my faith, family and friends!" I'm better now because of you!

Milkmaid and Calf

Have you ever needed to ponder a situation that eventually called for a big decision and others thought they knew better than you what was best? Maybe best in their eyes but bringing chaos into your spirit not peace? Here's a story that comes to mind.

There was a farmer, trying to get a young calf into the barn but the calf could not be persuaded. Nothing worked for him. The farmer became exasperated so tried to force the issue, pushing and prodding the calf from behind trying to get that little calf into the barn...to no avail.

A milkmaid, observing this dilemma, quietly came up, took a bucket of milk, stuck her thumb in it, then gave her thumb to the calf to suck. She then led the calf leading him directly into the barn!  No fight, no resistance, just a calm calf where the farmer wanted him!

I think we are all a bit like that calf, resisting  others aggressive attempts that try to get us to a point they think we should be at. It never fails to amaze me, however, how we come to answers, especially after praying intently for guidance, trusting the divine to lead us. Yes, often through others but in gentle ways. I think peace vs. chaos answers whether our conclusion was Spirit led or not.  No need for a farmer to push us, only a milkmaid to lead us!

A Grocery Cart

Our area has an Aldi's store close by. An interesting situation occurs in the parking lot every now and then when a customer coming out the store, goes up to another customer just walking toward the store, offers that cart to the person and will not take the quarter in exchange. At the same time you might hear, "Pass it on!"

This gesture, of giving a cart with no desire to take a  quarter in exchange, is a small thing but brings such a warm feeling in my heart. I love doing it, passing the gesture on and driving away with a smile! It really is no big deal but reaps huge dividends.

"Passing it on" can use a multitude of faces not just a grocery cart. So, with that, I have a huge favor to ask each of you reading my posts this day or in the future: would you consider "passing it on" with a SHARE below the post.

The likes and comments are terrific but I am trying to get the "secret" out regarding spiritual direction so this small gesture on your part will help others find a meaningful resource for their spiritual well-being! Just imagine how they might feel if they really knew how spiritual direction filled their spirit...just like passing a grocery cart on! Of course, I always smile and encourage them to "pass it on" (the good deed).

Thank you so much for helping me achieve my new year resolution of sharing the beauty of spiritual direction. May each of you be blessed this New Year 2017!

January 1

Meditation for the Day

In the new year, I will live one day at a time. I will make each day one of preparation for better things ahead. I will not dwell on the past or the future, only on the present.  I will bury every fear of the future, all thoughts of unkindness and bitterness, all my dislikes, my resentments, my sense of failure, my disappointments in others and in myself, my gloom and my despondency.  I will leave all these things buried and go forward, in this new year, into a new life.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that God will guide me one day at a time in the new Year, I pray that for each day, God will supply the wisdom and the strength that I need.
                                          (From Twenty-Four Hours a Day)

Happy New Year 2017 to you and yours from Molly LaFond and
