I think of the many "glaciers" that rip and tear at each of us over the years. Many times it is such a slow process we hardly notice. Then again, the process is wrenching. I think of a woman, years ago, whose husband died, quite dependent on him in good health, but some time later, cheerfully said, "I'm a new person," liking the new person she had become.
Yes, I even remember running into an acquaintance I hadn't seen for many, many years and when she asked what I was doing now, shared that I was now a spiritual director. She laughed and said, "You!" Yes, it is amazing! I even marvel to think of my 18 years as an RN, then 23 years as a hospital chaplain, and now a spiritual director. My mom, if she were alive today, would also say, "you?!!"
There are changes, growth and beauty within each of us that, in the present, may be hard to envision. Life is a process. All we need do is look at the fiords of New Zealand to see the beauty of that landscape to know we have a beauty within us as beautiful!
