Opening Fishing 2016

On dock fishing!
Opening fishing was the same weekend as Mother's Day this year. This time of year always brings me memories of my own mom and amazing, this memory also has to do with fishing.

Dad bought an old school bus and it was converted into a camper. It had bunk beds against the back door and then we would put fold up army cots down the isle. Benches lined the side up front. It was amazing how many we could fit into that thing as we drove to our favorite lake about an hour from home.

Then the fishing began.  It was mom who patiently sat on the dock with us kids, with bobbers and worms on the end of our line, waiting for bluegills to bite.  The least little ripple on the water brought shouts of, "I have a fish on!!"  Nope, it wasn't a fish, mom explained, until the bobber went under water, then that was our cue to set the hook!

I always smile as I recall the many things my mom taught my siblings and me over all our growing up years. Of course, memories are not a straight line thing. Sometimes these good memories are intertwined with not so happy times and times of struggles. These times give me pause for gratitude, though, for the person all these situations have made me in being the person that I am.

What about you?  Are there times of gratitude in your memories that make you pause, be grateful, perhaps even to say a prayer for your mom, for the person you have become because of her, or possibly in spite of her! It's amazing the power opening fishing weekend has when it falls on the same weekend as Mother's Day, isn't it!
