Oxygen Mask

This last week of October 2025 begins a busy week before my surgery in November. I think of the  commercial where the oxygen masks come down and the message is that we can't take care of others if we don't take care of ourselves first.

These past months have certainly opened my eyes that when I'm chasing my own tail with medical tests and treatment I'm certainly not able to focus on much else.  I wish it weren't so but I'm learning to ask for help and accept help a bit more graciously.

When I have listened to the still, small voice that speaks to me those pieces of the puzzle have been falling into place. It is a huge puzzle but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had to traverse huge situations in life.

So, I will be out of commission in November for some weeks because of surgery and plan to get back to you later in winter after some recovery time.  I have appreciated all your support, kind words and prayers.  Continue to follow my updates on Caringbridge/MollyLafond (no spaces).  Thank you and God bless you!

UPDATE

Today I completed  5 1/2 weeks of radiation, in case you did not keep up with details on caring bridge.  There will be several weeks to allow my insides to rest before surgery in November.  That will be done in Milwaukee Froedtert hospital.  There are many logistical parts to getting ready for it but things are falling into place. I am calm, confident and couldn't be in better hands. It will be a huge abdominal surgery, involving many organs.  My surgical oncologist is the best! I will let you know more on this site after the dust settles.  Thank you for your continued prayers!!

Another One!

Another one!! Two childen killed, seventeen injured inside a Catholic church.  Besides being sick, again, that this happened one more time; we have let it happen again! It makes me mad, and I have written my comments, to the local gun club, asking why there has never been an admonishment from the NRA that the Second Amendment is one way that guns were never meant to be used this way!!

Yes, we extend our prayers and condolences  but we need more than wordswe need action. WE, the people, need to take contact and demand action from our elected officials.  This is not about Democrat vs. Republican nor about transgender.  It is much broader that these issues.

We need talk on the local level, in our churches and businesses to maintain safety. One church not far from here locks the doors 5 minutes after a service begins.

So, now what? Change the channel, write the representatives, ask you church & business leaders for a protocol...we can do more...we must do more! Put your prayers into your feet!

Lightening

When I drove to Ohio in May I was bucking a storm near Fort Wayne; lightening was flashing in a distance.  It was 1145 pm and as I looked up at the sky I wondered if it was a storm. The moon was peeking over a thick bank of clouds.  Then, within seconds, the moon almost disappeared into those clouds...almost like it was playing peak-a-boo!

All of a sudden it hit me!  Have we ever been in a really severe storm of life that made it challenging to see God's presence,  sometimes even getting sidetracked because of circumstances, emotions and details of what was happening...challenging to see that God is really there?

I was positive it was the moon and for people of faith we know God is really there, but sometimes we just have to sort things out to really see Him, to feel Him or to know that He's not far from us. Have you ever been through something huge in your life and was left with a sense of awe?  I certainly have!!

So, the next time you see lightening up ahead, and you wonder if a storm is coming, perhaps those clouds will inspire you like they did me! It's amazing how nature can speak to us sometimes louder than words!

HEARTWRENCHING

I feel so sad to have to need to inform you of my stuff when the horrendous flood in Texas has devoured, unexpectantly, so many folks.  That does not minimize what the area of Los Angeles has gone through with massive fires.

The main thing I think about is that so many of us have a "story"...not good, bad, better or worse but each one is heavy, heartbreaking and enough that these stories could get us down.

What keeps me going is the thought that only one person thoroughly understands how heavy that load is, often falling himself under that load.  To all others, yes, we can say, "but you don't understand."  But to Him, nope, he does understand.

And there are even the least likely who come forward and say, "If you need anything...." And they mean it!

Texas is reeling from the floods, not knowing if our dear president will help with disaster relief, FEMA relief or what, so each of us need to do what we can to help each other in any way we can. I just pray that a lot of "Simons" will help carry this natural disaster cross that so many are affected by!

And, yes, Jesus does understand! We cry to Him to help us all carry our crosses, sending those who can to help, in any way they can!

Health News!

I have some health news to share with you that you will want to know.  Instead of detailing it here I invite you to go to my Caring Bridge page that has been started in order to keep you updated, rather than me trying to get to everyone individually!  I ask for your prayers and support.  If you have access to any prayer support groups or church lists, please feel free to put me on them.  I know prayer works!

THE DOTS

Do you or have you ever "wondered" what God wants of you? Ever have someone say something to you that was already on your mind? Ever challenged connecting the dots? I have. Some previous intentions got waylayed the past couple of years because of surgeries...then today, while at a funeral visitation a person there told me she/they were waiting for me to come and volunteer yet! (Is that a hint from God?)

Even my speaking engagements, that I had done several years ago,  as well as another venture, had taken a lull but this week I was asked to give a presentation in Lakewood this summer!

Also, weeks ago the deacon at church asked if I would consider being spiritual director for the womens' CEW (Christian Experience Weekend) in November!  I had expressed my availability many years ago to no avail.

Now, months ago I began back lectoring and being a Eucharistic minister.  I had had a little chat with God after being told that "we are Jesus to others." I took it to heart and gave up some resentments and it just feels like God was waiting for me to let go of those things.  My heart says God now is showing me the way, putting opportunities in front of me for my consideration.

There were times in my life that all I saw were isolated incidents until a retreat master pointed out a bigger picture. I began to see a bigger picture with my life. Yes, there has been a lull in several details in my life but then again I hear words of a friend telling me, "God has you right where He wants you!"

So, do you ever wonder about your life? Maybe those possibilities ahead can be a bit unnerving with no specific answers but where is faith? Maybe too, God has you right where He wants you, also! Perhaps there are dots that can be connected.  Look at all the dots and try to see a bigger picture!

Viewpoints

During my little jaunt to Ohio a few weeks ago I was visiting with a relative, who now claims to be atheist.  He knew exactly the day and situation that he asked himself, "why am I doing this (Catholic ministries, church etc.)."  He explained it all in great detail, to him, very logically. My sister was suprised at how open my relative was but I believe it was my openness and love for him.

Of course, many things have occurred in this imperfect church and many have turned their backs on it; sometimes others have turned their backs on any church, not just Catholic. I have questioned why they "put up" with their challenges.  I certainly can't blame them when they choose alternate options.

However, that also brings me to the word, "love", especially "...and the greatest of these is love." Other words get mixed into the equation such as anger, resentments, forgiveness, tolerance and patience but it seems to me that with love, we can come to the other things eventually.

Many years ago a Lutheran acquaintance told me to "simply love" a relative whom I was concerned about.  It worked.  No words, no proselitizing, harping...nothing but "love him." My relative was certainly around a lot of love with us.

I could have tried taking him down a road of logic, attempting to bring him to an obvious point of recognizing God but it must come from his own insides.  It is so challenging to use no words, only actions of love...listening, no arguments or rebuttals...a real attempt to see the other's viewpoint.

So often we may attempt to argue and try  to get our point of view across.  I am guilty and have often been at fault in this realm. However, I also have been more apt to change my viewpoint after feeling heard rather than shamed.  Attitudes change in many ways, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.  Love gets us much further than rancor!

Back Roads

My best friend from high school and I took a backroads vacation this past week.  We had only one main stop in Cincinatti first but after that we were at the mercy of the road.  Our days were spent across the state on highway 50, then 60!

What we discovered when we least expected it was amazing.  The first night we stumbled into a ma and pa motel, cleaner than most, which cost $80!  The next morning we found ourselves in a restaurant and on the advice of two locals, got biscuits and sausage gravy.  Both our bills together came to $7.00!!

Unbeknownst to me, we drove into McArthur, OH, which is in the poorest county of the state with only a12,000 population...in the county!  McArthur was where my dad had his charcoal plant. Speaking with several folks in the courthouse there we got more history, finally finding the spot where his plant had been.

After spending two nights in Marietta, on the Ohio River, I was disappointed to not find tomato plantations that I had taken my grandmother to when I was sixteen in a suburb called Devola. Three Devol cousins had begun them. It was named after her family name, Devol.

Crushed hopes didn't last long when someone told us not to miss the #2 Dam and locks there. A local fella, Clyde, was overlooking the dam.  He was a wealth of information on the fish that are caught there, boat traffic and the depth of the Muskingum River, which meets up in Marietta with the Ohio River.

We didn't know what the rest of our trip would present us but in McConnellsville we were ready for a pit stop, coffee and a visit to the antique store next door.  The proprietor of the antique store, Jamie, couldn't have been nicer but the fun suprise was her two pups snuggled into their beds underneath the counter. We  both found a few things there but it was most fun just connecting with Jamie. If you're ever in McConnelsville, give Jamie a big "hi" from Vicki and me! I told her she would probably make a mention in my blog!!

It seemed to Vicki and me that when we were open to anything that came along we were not disappointed.  Even the weather: it rained one day but, when we were inside not outside.  When we tried to find a parking spot in Cinci, we pulled right into a parky tower, got to the street level, just across the street from where we were going. This was amazing because a ballgame crowd was downtown at the same time! It felt like Someone was guiding us all the way.

If we had originally said we were going to McArthur, Marietta, McConnellsville, Philo, Duncan Falls, Blue Rock/Cutler Lake folks would look at us as if we had grown two heads; these places hardly even warrant a dot on a map...if you even know how to read a paper map!!

This certainly was not a high profile trip but being open to all the backroads really brought us warm memories, good pictures and a very economical time! Some of it really was going down memory lane but I also know I will never get that way again!  You might say these backroads really gave us a trip of a lifetime!!

What treasures of the heart might you have found on the backroads of your travels? Have you ever felt led by a guiding force bigger than you?  It's there for each of us, if only we open our eyes and hearts to it!

Clyde 94 yrs. old!

A RUT

Ever been in a rut? No not a snow rut but always doing things the same way, time after time?  Like always doing home chores the same day, the same routine: laundry on Mondays, groceries, cleaning, etc!! Some of the routine is no big deal but I know friends who will not divert when asked to do something else because they are entrenched in doing a specific task that day!!

Well, I am facing this same thing right now.  Traveling a distance on the same roads brings a comfort level, knowing the traffic, gas stations, etc. leaves little to the imagination. Yes, there are some drawbacks, including construction, high volume and slowdowns.

I am planning an entirely differen route, which brings anxiety about mileage, rest stops, and other things.  There's a comfort curve that I don't have yet because it's been over forty years of being on this new route.

What do you do when changes come your way?    Get ridgid and avoid spontaneity? Or look at the opportunity as exciting and enriching? Many situations can be adjusted and completed at a later time. For me, it's worth trying something new and different. There's always a way, or more, to get out of a rut!

Flower Seeds

May is here; weather is warming and the "flower bug" is hitting!  It may be a tad too early to plant but this time gives me space to figure out what flowers, soil and conditions I am dealing with.

Then there is the weather, night temps and my travel plans.  Lots of variables to consider.  A local consideration is Mother's day.  This is a
huge day for the greenhouses and sometimes my choices disappear long before I can plant, so lots of thinking ahead!

Of all things,  a thought came to mind about how each personality is so different, some needing to be tended to with different approaches.  Just like seeds: radishes are fast sprouters, carrots not! Some like shade, some do well in high sun, dry soil. Some of us are morning people, some are night owls, talkative vs. quiet, introverts vs. extroverts.  Likes vs. dislikes would need a chapter all their own!

You would think each of us would have the patience to deal with the differences in the other but how many of us are irritated at the smallest discords!

So, the next time we plant our garden, put in our seeds, know there will be many considerations in how fast our flowers will come up.  However, the larger picture might bring us to consider our bigger garden we tend every day in life with our spouse, family, friends and all those around us!

Our flower seeds in life need love, kindness, consideration, gentleness, patience and a whole lot more.  What a beautiful garden of life these qualities will bring!

Pope Francis

May Pope Francis rest in peace!  Even among religious clergy there are deep differences between ultra conservatives and liberals.  Let us pray for the Conclave that will choose our next pope!  Let his example to the migrants, the poor, the outcasts and all people and religions be an example that we may take to heart ourselves!

God bless you, Pope Francis, good and faithful servant! May your soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,  rest in peace!! Amen.

MEL

There is a wellness podcast I listened to by Mel Robbins.  She said many folks in their older years think this is the time to just sit back and decline...thinking declining to death is inevitable.  WRONG!!! The only way to prevent a decline is to MOVE!

Even as I write this Channel 2 has news of an "82  6/12" years old man who loved track and field sports in school.  Now he has a hard time walking so running isn't in his bag of desires. However, power lifting is! Can you imagine.  He doesn't even practice because that makes him sore but he adds a 2+ lbs. every time he attends a meet.

Getting back to Mel Robbins, she says the best way to move is to simply walk around the house, walk around the block and to keep adding to it...just move! Of course, when we get older, more and more of our friends and acquaintances leave us one way or another... moving, dying, transitioning to care facilities...you name it...leaving us lonely and sad.

Getting involved somehow helps our spirit and can bring some spark and increased activity into our day. Each of us can decide how we are going to move but just move!  For me, I just ordered a 3 wheeled electric trike that I can pedal when I want, coast when I'm tired!  Can't wait.  How about you? By the way, Mel Robbins has many fine podcasts and all are very pertinent!

Life's Hill

I was eighteen when the Viet Nam war was raging and a bit removed from all the chaos, turmoil, riots and political arguments of that time.  Also, a saying:  of being on "this side of the hill, not under it," took me awhile to understand. It also has taken me until not too long to understand really what Watergate was all about.

I didn't necesarrily consciously "avoid" all that was going on but circumstances helped keep me at that distance. Well, there are different circumstances now.  At the local "Hands Off 2025 demonstration  April 5, 2025, the fellow next to me wondered where all the younger people were.  Oh, we weren't all old but those in their 30's and 40's were not plentiful.

Maybe wisdom, years and reality bring a higher sense of urgency pushing many of us to take action and doing what little we can do to make a difference. 600 (at the local demonstration) is certainly a far cry from thousands (at Madison and other large cities) but individually, each one of us adds up to make a change.

Think of all the demonstrations against Viet Nam.  My best friend helped organize busses to go to Kent State!! Until presently, I wondered how anyone could even get so passionate to do such a thing!! But now...long before yesterday's demonstration was organised I said I would go if there was a march!

So, how about you? What can you, and each of us do, to get passionate about important matters that make a difference.  For me too, it has also been about volunteering and not sitting back.  Find a group or cause that can make a difference.  Not only political but meaningful.

It might be a pantry, a parish, humane society or government, just pick something; it might be your relationship with God. We all matter.  Don't be like me and wait until you're starting to roll down the other side of life's hill we are on.  It might be too late when you find you're under the sod, not on top of it!

Camels

--There are some sayings that have guided me lately:

"yes, 'In God we trust' but still tie up your camel! (Anthony DeMello)"; "you are right where you are supposed to be!"; "we are Jesus to others (Fr. Dave Beaudry)."

Well, what  do these sayings have anything to do with anything?

I was thinking about the state of affairs yesterday, April 4, 2025, and can only think that yes, I and lots of folks do trust God but operating with fear we act and live as if our "camels" are running loosely in the yard.  A picture comes to mind of trying to corral a herd of cats! Then to mind Kamala Harris's comment regarding living with courage rather than fear comes to mind.

This morning my thoughts terrorized me to the point of thinking "if things get so bad who might I have come live with me to share expenses!!!  And maybe I should go on a "hoarding" spree getting food, drinks and of course toilet paper!!"

So, rather than write a dissertation on my other sayings I will stick to the first one about the camels.I see my camels as having a tether on them so that I can tie them up with.  I have others to help me, supportive friends and family.  I do have my faith, God and prayers  and of course, some common sense to decide what needs attention physically, nutritionally and financially.

So, hopefully, this little reflection might help you know that yes, it's good to trust in God, always...but also, tie up your camel!

The Weather

It just hit me! Regularly, when I traveled anywhere my husband would watch the weather, giving me reports, making sure I was aware of impending storms and etc! Sometimes, I got frustrated because I was fully aware of the weather, too!

Weather, even now in March, is unpredictable with ice, snow, slippery roads and black ice. Even when I'm not planning on going anywhere I still check the weather because if I go outside I don't want to slip and fall.  It is just one of those things, trying to be safe.

Well, then I thought of other things like a neighbor and former work friend who refuses to vote. I hate to bring up voting, and of course it is a personal choice, but the older I get the more I think about the safety of individuals, their security and our country.

This hits close to home with friends who are veterans, depending on services and income from defending our country; relatives who may be out of a job because of unscrupulous cuts to their departments; seniors who can barely make ends meet and children who depend on their only meals at school.

I never say the weather must be changed and I don't disagree with trimming spending. However, when floods, fire and hurricanes come in disastrous ways we look to bigger reasons like climate change.

So, too, are we looking to broader issues that can influence our future when it comes time to vote?!  We need to pay attention to the future, just like paying attention to the weather in order to prevent more harm as well as voting for those who can impact our future! Are there bigger storms coming...or are they already here?!

Third air traffic accident in three weeks! Three in three!!  Air traffic controllers were short as it was; we need more, not less. God bless all those involved and affected including those who were injured.

Joe's Run

When I was a kid (that was yesterday!), my cousin, Mary and I would traipse for hours a creek called Joe's Run.  Joe's Run ran for miles to different parts of Zanesville, my hometown. One section ran through the golf course; one part had some deeper water and a falls; the furthest end ultimately emptied into the Muskingum River. That river ran through town joined the Licking River, finally connecting to the Ohio River at Marietta, Ohio.

This journey took quite awhile but think about it, how the Ohio joins the Mississippi as it then goes to the Gulf of Mexico!! (Please don't correct me here. I choose what I said). It hit me that if a small creek or stream has this much potential with a bigger body of water, then how much are each of us indivuals part of a much larger reality.

I can tell personal experiences of speaking up or having personal conversations with those in authority helped, from chairman of a board, pastors, department heads or those who were the leaders. Of course, it pays to be calm and have correct facts, not just emotions. Looking back over my lifetime I have talked with many.

Yes, it can be frightening, however, I also pray and ask for guidance, a calm demeanor and the right words. Sticking to principals, not tearing down personalities is paramount.

For me, sometimes I felt like I was "arm wrestling" with God because some of those times I surely didn't want to approach those individuals, but felt a much deeper push to do it. And I could have lost my job!!

One thing, I didn't have expectations that the other side do it my way, but simply knew I had to honor what my God was asking of me! It has always brought me peace!!

Looking back over many of my own "Joe's Run" experiences, I now can see how they joined a much larger picture so if ever you think your words, example and actions are insignificant, think of Joe's Run and how that small, insignificant stream eventally joins the Ohio River. We all know how great that river is!! Always know we are part of a much bigger world!

My Purse!

Many years ago I had an incident where I forgot my purse on the back of a chair at a local restaurant.  That establishment had a policy that any belonging left by a customer would be kept in their safe until claimed.  What a safeguard!

But when I called it was not there!  Believe me, have you ever lost you purse/wallet? It had everything in it, including license, keys, money, credit cards and more!! What more that could be done with all that valuable information was enough to tip me upside down let alone the process I had to go through to deal with each lost item!

Luckily, although frightening, the restaurant called saying a waitress had taken it home. She returned it the next day but potential remained.  Now the fear of whether she had information that was inside the purse of what she might do with it in the future.

At one distant point I said, "all's well that ends well" however, just like there being things that must be done when we lose our purse/wallet, what do we do now when a bigger purse is being taken from us, our children and our future?

Well, think of it.  How do we deal with someone  having the keys to the Treasury Department and all the information inside... social security numbers, tax returns... endless possibilties!! And what will happen if the Department of Education is shut?  Those are purses, and possibly more, on a huge scale that could have tsunami effects that might paralyze our country.  The richest man in the world has access to all of this. What safeguards are there now?

This is huge; it is affecting not only a certain party, but each and every one  of us.  What will Musk do with information he will have from inside the Treasury...why does he even think he needs it...it is not his!! What a violation!

We can avoid voting, or bashing one or the other side but life has just gotten real.   We may be losing a huge purse and may not ever get it back!  Safeguards that are supposed to be there have collapsed, called Congress. That purse is called our Constitutional government! It needs to be protected at all costs! Now what will we do...what will you do?

Mice!

I have a best friend and when either of us has a situation that has us in a panic attack we call each other and say, "I'm up on a chair!"  You, know, like when a mouse scares the daylights out of us and we run up on a chair!!! Snakes in the yard do the same thing to me...it's called a panic attack at the snap of a finger!  No fun and not easy to deal with sometimes!

There are so many things that can put us up on that chair!  For one, some folks often have financial concerns wondering if the deposit will come in before a bill is due.  If a family member needs help, is there a capability to help them. I think of today's news regarding the plane/helicopter crash in DC...I can only imagine ALL that those families are going through (and my heart just aches for everyone affected by it!)

We all have been "up on the chair" at some time, no matter the details but what has helped us get off the chair?? Recovery programs use phrases, one being "One day at a time."  Another one is, "Just for today."  Then, prayer really helps, and listening then to what God might speak back to us. Good friends are a goldmine, too, to listen to us when we need to tell someone when we are on the chair! Also, turning the news off helps!

So, when real life situations push us "up on a chair", I say, it's not that we got up on that chair but how soon can we get down from it and what helped us get down? It happens to all of us but not letting those "mice" of life scare us to hopelessness is what really matters!  Think about it!

Bag of Rocks

Have you ever carried a bag of rocks around with you?  For most of you, I know you haven't. When I was working I often did 5th Steps for individuals in the 12 Step Programs.  One way I used to illustrate how heavy their resentments weighed on them was for them to bring a bag of multiple sized rocks to the session. One person reported years later how she finally ditched the rocks, feeling years lighter!

Have you been watching the hostage situation? Well, here we are thousands of miles away, comfortable in our own environment so it's easy to not get too involved.  Then there are the fires, floods and then everyday situations like a car being in the garage

Have you ever just pondered bigger pictures asking how these huge situations could ever parrallel our own?  They often seem so far removed we almost have no comparison; maybe that is true but an awareness came to me that would argue this assumption.

How are each of us hostages in our own life?  Resentments not forgiven, illness, infirmity, no transportation, financial issues...there are so many.

I look and hear how the past many months have affected the far east hostages physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually but let us ask ouselves how our own "hostage situations" affect us and those around us.  Addictions? Violent behavior? Passive aggressiveness? Broken family relationships?

Let us pray for the far away hostages, those in our own country and ourselves, for insight and resources to deal with it all. However, not one of us is immune from being hostage in our own environment. The bag of rocks we carry with us can then be cast far and wide which will have such a healing effect on each of us!

Only Imagine!

I can only imagine! Loss of life, loss of home, neighborhood, schools, church, grocery, future insurance...and the devastation isn't done. Where do masses of  folks evacuate too??? Fires in L.A. continue to rage; very minimally contained!

A local person on the news yesterday was discussing what meant the most to her at that time.  It doesn't help to say, "well, you can rebuild," but the biggest was knowing the public cared, was sending hugs and was expressing care and concern.

It was heartwrenching when one local did not even know where he would sleep that night!  Can you imagine not knowing where you'd lay your head at the end of the day? World Kitchens was there helping to feed. Folks don't even have a knife and fork of their own to eat with.

It's easy to sit in my comfy home and complain about the cold or snow while bundling up in front of the TV but really, how will you and I do something concrete to help the disasters that continue to ravage us?  Floods, fires, hurricanes...a huge picture is painted in front of us...when will we begin to believe that something major must be done?  Denial of climate issues is killing us.

And in the meantime, how will each of us do something to help, in some way, the local population in L.A. now.  Can you only imagine if you and I were in their shoes? What would help each of us? Then pass that kindness along!

Hire a Kid!

During my confinement after neck surgery this summer I had "hired" my 15 year old next door neighbor to help me scoop my cat boxes in the basement. Well, it's six months later and lots has transpired since.  I have taken him fishing to a friend's pond, made a wonderfull fish fry for him and his family outside in my Weber grill  and find him just "hanging out" here, playing with my two cats, and above all talking about everyday stuff.
His parents profusely thank me for my time with him.  Of course, I thought I was the more fortunate UNTIL they all started telling me some other more serious situations going on. Now I get it!
Again, this brings me to the reality that our mission in life changes, often from the "doing" mode to the "being" mode. And yet, our life is still very important in each phase of our being.  We may be sad or grieve the changes and transitions we encounter but as we have little chats with God, I believe we will see from our heart what role we play, albeit differently than how we would like, but what does God want from us?  What does God want from you?  So, if you deside to "hire a kid" for your own needs, you may find a bigger situation than you ever imagined!!
