Thank a Vet!

I want to take this opportunity, Memorial Day weekend, to thank all the vets who have given and sacrificed, many with their lives, for each and every one of us.  We live in the best country we could be in.

I was at a meeting yesterday and a friend of mine put it very succinctly as she shared how "what is NOT said" from vets speaks very profoundly...memories that haunt them, too painful to speak.

To friends with whom I have been out of touch for many years, to present friends, to acquaintances and strangers alike, thank you for your service!  We, as a nation, would not have the freedoms we have without you.   God bless you, and God bless America!

Not Quite Summer

Wow, I can't believe how the month of May has flown by, Memorial Day weekend is nearly here and "life" is nipping at my hem and I realize I have not written anything for a while!  So, rather than beat myself up any further I'll just say that I will get back to you as soon as I pick the asparagus, put another load in the washer, help the neighbors with some end of life papers, talk with a long lost friend whose sister died and....

Thank you for your patience!  Life just jumped on the fast track!  Enjoy the wonderful days we are  having!  NO snow, no ice...yup, a few mosquitoes!  Get some good "squitter dope" and that will help! It's not quite summer but it may as well be!

The Milk Maid

There was a farmer who was having a heck of a time getting a calf into the barn.  The farmer tried pushing the calf into the barn when a milkmaid came along.  She moistened her thumb with milk from a pail of milk, stuck her thumb into the calve's mouth and led him into the barn.  No pushing required!

Ever find yourself in a life situation similar to this? Have you ever wanted to scream, to "push the button" trying to make something happen faster, now, today, not tomorrow?  I was reminded of that today when a neighbor stopped by and shared his experience while helping someone but then the person he was helping was treating him more like a hired hand rather than a gift sent by another person.

Every day I make a review of my day and ponder whether I have been like the farmer:  pushy, aggressive, demanding or antagonistic. The story of the milkmaid comes to mind.

How do each one of us treat others especially during frustrating situations? Do we get pushy, trying to push and push, trying to get our way across?  Being calm and assertive rather than loud and aggressive is a challenge for many. Maybe a visual of a milkmaid leading a calf into the barn should be a reminder for us each and every day.

Birth Day

Today is my birth day!  Not that this is anything new...it really lands on the same date every year!!! Honest! And with each year, I get older and older.  I bet some of you reading this may say, "gosh, Molly, you must be really hard up for ideas of what to write about...now you're bragging about your birthday!"

No, not at all.  Have you ever pondered the beauty, the miracle, the gift that your birth has brought to this world?  I do think of the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" that shows every Christmas.  What in my world would not be what it is had I not been born?  What would be entirely different without my presence? What about each and every one of us?

How do each of us honor our birth day each year?  We are so unique, to say the least.  Yes, I have character defects.  Well, don't we all.  I would like to have the qualities more like a giraffe than a jackal...a big heart, compassionate communication rather than competitive or critical.  Isn't that an ongoing journey, though?

So, happy birth day to each and every one of us on our special day this year.   Let us honor our special day, our birth day and give it the recognition it should have. We are unique in every way! As the saying goes, "God don't make junk!"  What an impact one person has...then multiply that. Just imagine.

Opening Fishing 2016

On dock fishing!
Opening fishing was the same weekend as Mother's Day this year. This time of year always brings me memories of my own mom and amazing, this memory also has to do with fishing.

Dad bought an old school bus and it was converted into a camper. It had bunk beds against the back door and then we would put fold up army cots down the isle. Benches lined the side up front. It was amazing how many we could fit into that thing as we drove to our favorite lake about an hour from home.

Then the fishing began.  It was mom who patiently sat on the dock with us kids, with bobbers and worms on the end of our line, waiting for bluegills to bite.  The least little ripple on the water brought shouts of, "I have a fish on!!"  Nope, it wasn't a fish, mom explained, until the bobber went under water, then that was our cue to set the hook!

I always smile as I recall the many things my mom taught my siblings and me over all our growing up years. Of course, memories are not a straight line thing. Sometimes these good memories are intertwined with not so happy times and times of struggles. These times give me pause for gratitude, though, for the person all these situations have made me in being the person that I am.

What about you?  Are there times of gratitude in your memories that make you pause, be grateful, perhaps even to say a prayer for your mom, for the person you have become because of her, or possibly in spite of her! It's amazing the power opening fishing weekend has when it falls on the same weekend as Mother's Day, isn't it!
