One Person

A few weeks ago I crossed paths with someone I had met at a Cursillo in the 1980's. That is a long, long time ago.  We had kept in touch for a short while after the Cursillo but until recently, we  had lost touch.  Lots has happened in both of our lives in that length of time but one thing she remembered was that I had sent her a sympathy card when her mom died, citing what card I had sent, even framing it. Actually, I did not remember much of what she was telling me, but it struck a deep cord in my own spirit.

A similar situation had happened to me, after dad had died in 1980. A co-worker sent me a card that  had touched my heart in a similar way.  I too had framed it.  I still have that framed card, it is so special. That person probably does not know what her gesture meant to me; I don't remember if I ever told her!

To think each of us can do such a simple act of kindness, expressing care and concern for another person, with absolutely no thought of how it will be received on the other end! We don't need to wear big hats, nor have fancy titles; we just need to be kind, considerate, thoughtful and reach out to one person, not the whole world, just one person!

A kind word, a card, a container of soup, a phone call...to one person.  Do we matter?  Do I matter?  I really hadn't thought much about this until now.  Knowing what impact my seeming insignificant gesture meant to my friend brings me to be more conscious of other hurting people in my own family and circle of friends, neighbors and acquaintances. A kind word, a card, a container of soup, a phone call...to one person!  AND, if you were the recipient of this kind gesture, consider letting that person know what it meant to you!
